Site Description

Interns at this site can expect to gain rich experience working in an interdisciplinary environment in addition to community-based organizations. Both of our offices are co-located with related fields such as occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, and behavioral therapy. Interns can expect to co-treat with related disciplines on a regular basis. We also offer music-assisted equine therapy, which combines horseback riding with music-based interventions to create a highly motivating, sensory environment.

The majority of clients are individuals with autism, chromosomal abnormalities, cerebral palsy, TBI, and developmental delay. Interns will also have the opportunity to experience sessions with adults with developmental delays and older adults. Sessions vary in location and include in-home, clinic-based, telehealth.

Interns complete 35-40 hours per week to contribute to their overall 1020 hours, with a flexible schedule that allows for self-directed research, learning, and an ability to select opportunities that are particularly interesting to them. Over the course of our six-month internship, interns will expand their clinical, musical, and professional knowledge by completing clinical hours (observations, co-treats, and independently led sessions), book reviews, research article reviews, team meetings, inservices, professional development workshops, and educational meetings to specifically target areas of interest for the intern.

January 2025 Music Therapy Internship Application

Interview process: Please prepare the following for the interview. On-site interviews are preferred, but accommodations can be made for out-of-state applicants.

Demonstrate Musical Skill Competency through:

  • Voice: You will be evaluated primarily on pitch accuracy and appropriate volume

  • Guitar: Prepare a song to be played and transposed on the guitar. You will be evaluated on the accuracy of chords, strum pattern, and transposition skills.

  • Piano: Prepare a song from a different decade and genre to be played and transposed on the piano. You will be evaluated on the accuracy of accompaniment pattern and transposition skills.

  • Sight Reading: There will be a simple sight-reading component. You will be evaluated on the accuracy of melody and accompaniment.

Demonstrate Clinical Skill Competency through:

  • Documentation sample: Provide an example of your documentation from a clinical placement.

  • Live intervention sample: Prepare to play and discuss how the musical elements of a third, self-selected song or intervention could be used and/or altered to address a specific client's goal. Think of this as a small case study in which you will provide us with a sample client and goal, and a well-thought-out and rationalized intervention.
